Bassoons can take a lot of knocks and wear over the years, resulting in gouges, worn-through finishes and even the odd crack.
We have a wealth of experience in bassoon finishing and refinishing and have developed a range of techniques using different dyes and varnishes to match the bassoon and the wishes of the owner.
For smaller areas we recommend refinishing just the affected areas (around tone-holes for example) and we have developed a great deal of expertise in blending the new dye and varnish with the old
If the worn areas are very large the best approach is often to refinish the whole bassoon. We remove all the current finish and start again from bare wood.
We can replicate the original stripes - and have developed a range of techniques to copy the methods used by different makers in different eras.
The bonus of a complete refinish is that the customer can choose the colour, the varnish and the striping to match their taste. But it is skilled and time-consuming work, so may take some time to do.
